though perched upon an invisible tree limb. She looked to be in her mid-twenties, with long, curling black hair, a heart-shaped face, and blue eyes. She wore a long dress that looked to D.J. as though it belonged in the sixties section of a vintage clothing store. The woman's feet, swinging in the air above D.J.'s head, were bare.
''Aah." The woman put her hands out in front of her and wiggled her fingers. "Much better. I knew I'd enjoy having a body again, if only for a little while."
D.J. blinked. She blinked again, harder this time. The woman was still there. A groan issued from her lips as she fell back on the bed, squeezing her eyes shut.
"What's the matter, dear?"
"They told me this would happen, but I didn't believe them. All the old-timers said one day I'd hold too much in, and then I'd snap. But I thought they meant I'd start shooting innocent bystanders. I never thought I'd start seeing imaginary people." D.J.'s eyes snapped open, and she met the concerned gaze of the woman still dangling above her bed. "Or maybe that's the problem with the shooters. Maybe they see imaginary people, too, and they're just trying to shoot them."
The woman frowned. "I have no idea what you're talking about. I'm not imaginary. I'm a very real guardian angel."
D.J. groaned once more and turned over on her stomach. "Oh no, a religious hallucination. Now I've really gone 'round the bend. I don't even believe in God and now I'm seeing angels."
